Crave’s November Newsletter

Posted in Newsletter by cravethetruth on November 14, 2007

Hello from Crave!

September and October seem to have flown by.  There are a lot of new faces with us now, including myself and my fellow two new Youth Advisors!  Ashley Soetemans, Arjuna Thaskaran and myself (Dan Johnson) were brought on board in early September and we have settled in quite nicely with the rest of the Crave crew.

In early September we participated in the Tobacco-Free Movies event held in Toronto at the Toronto International Film Festival.  We made signs, we marched, we saw Michael Moore!  It was a great event and it got a lot of media coverage.  We followed up this event with a letter-writing campaign to the Ontario Film Review Board because they are going to discuss tobacco and film ratings at their next meeting.

At the beginning of October we hired 12 new Peer Leaders!  Welcome to Matt, Austen, Mark, Jobin, Ally, Ree, Jennifer, Mary, Ivy-Lynne, Chelsea, Harbi and Amulya.  We will be shifting to 2 clusters – a ‘North’ group in Milton, Georgetown and Acton, and a ‘South’ group representing Oakville and Burlington.

In the middle of October, we participated in an amazing weekend in Milton that we nicknamed ‘TWYTH’.  It was the Training Weekend for Youth in Tobacco Halton.  All of our Peer Leaders attended as well as 35 students participating in the High School Tobacco Action Grants.  Our Peer Leaders led Ice Breaker and Team Building sessions for all of the participants.  We had some amazing Guest Speakers including Sara from Colorado’s ‘Get Real’ Campaign and Cara from Ottawa’s Expose group.  The training weekend climaxed with a media event focused on Tobacco-Free Parks.  We collected cigarette butts from parks in Milton, invited the press, created an amazing poster using the butts and received a lot of media attention!

We are looking forward to a Halloween themed event, Peer Leader training at Great Wolf Lodge, and participating in Milton’s Santa Claus Parade at the end of November.

Just think, in a few years we’ll be able to simply embed microchips into your brain so you can find out what’s going on…but for now we’re just happy it’s online.

This is an online newsletter for all Youth Action Alliances in Central West…and everyone else interested in our cause!  We will be able to share our successes, photos and stories.

Stay tuned for more to come…
