Yep we actually had a talking cacultor tally the butts, only our calculator’s name was Matt (not a hand-held device with buttons and an lcd screen). And we made it kind of easy on him, as each person counted the butts they picked up as we went along, and we recorded it after each stop on a tally sheet.

Waiting until after to count them would be pretty nasty, and slower than a snail trying to cross a field covered in caramel syrup.

We cleaned for about 30 minutes at each of the 8 towns we visited. So I would say a good 4 hours were spent, but it was spread out over an 8-6 day including travelling etc. Afterwards the Simcoe portion of Fresh Heir used the butts to construct a 4 ft wide globe (with the butts as the land masses). It was displayed on a busy Simcoe intersection and surrounded by messages regarding environmental tobacco.

For the volunteers we had a previous ‘orientation’ night to get a contact list of everyone who wanted to help us out. (Facebook was a great help) We introduced ourselves and showed them events from the past did some fun activities as well. A little while later we used the list to inform everyone about a special volunteer opportunity (with lunch provided) and recieved a great response. We just continue to invite everyone to chosen dates for them to help out.
